Nine Questions to Ask Before You Buy an EAS Security Gate

Buying an EAS security gate is not like buying a printer. The gate at your entrance is only one part of a system that also involves tags, labels, detachers, staff habits and a supplier you may be dealing with for years. Most of the disappointment we hear about traces back to a question that was never asked at the quotation stage. Here are nine worth raising before you sign anything.

1. What happens at my entrance specifically?

Detection is a physical property, not a marketing number. Ask the supplier what your entrance width means for the configuration being quoted, and whether one pair of pedestals covers it or you need more. If your shopfront is unusually wide or open, say so up front rather than discovering the gap after installation.

2. What is around the doorway that could interfere?

Metal shutters, escalators, cash counters, generators, LED signage and even other electronic equipment near the door can affect how an EAS system behaves. A supplier who asks about your surroundings is a good sign. One who quotes without asking is guessing.

3. How do we keep false alarms under control?

Nothing kills an anti theft system faster than a gate that beeps at nothing. Staff learn to ignore it, and once they ignore it the system is decorative. Ask what causes false triggers in your setup and what can be adjusted if they start happening after go-live.

4. Is every part of this system compatible?

RF and AM are different technologies, and their tags and labels are not interchangeable. Confirm in writing that the gates, hard tags, soft labels, detachers and deactivators you are buying all belong to the same family. This sounds obvious and is still one of the most common mistakes in a first installation.

5. How many detachers and deactivators are included?

Count your tills, not your doors. Every counter that handles tagged stock needs its own magnetic detacher or deactivator, otherwise checkout slows down and staff quietly stop tagging items to save time. Under-equipping the till is a false economy.

6. What will consumables cost me every month?

Hard tags are reusable, but they get lost, broken and walked out with. Soft labels are consumed continuously. Ask about the ongoing cost of tags and labels at your expected volume, and confirm you can reorder the same specification later. A cheap gate paired with expensive or hard-to-source consumables is not a cheap system.

7. Who installs it, and who comes back if it stops working?

Find out whether installation is included, what the timeline looks like, and what happens when something fails six months later. Ask about warranty terms, response expectations and whether spares are held locally. A quotation with no service answer behind it is only half a quotation.

8. What do my staff actually have to do?

Every EAS system introduces new steps: tagging incoming stock, removing tags at the till, responding when the gate alarms. Ask the supplier to walk you through the daily routine, and agree a simple, consistent response to alarms before installation rather than improvising on the first busy Saturday.

9. Can this grow with the business?

If you plan to open another branch, expand the floor or add categories that need specialist protection — bottle tags, safer boxes, security lock hooks, non woven clothing labels — ask whether the system you are buying now extends cleanly to those. Committing to a technology is a long-term decision, and switching later means replacing tags as well as gates.
