EAS RF System or EAS AM System? How to Pick the Right Technology for Your Store

Once a retailer decides to install anti-theft gates, the next question is almost always the same: should it be an EAS RF system or an EAS AM system? Both do the same job, detecting a live tag or label passing between the exit pedestals, but they do it on different frequencies, use different consumables and behave differently around metal, liquids and store layouts. Choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake because gates, labels, tags and deactivators are not interchangeable between the two. This guide lays out the practical differences so you can make the call with confidence.
How an EAS RF system works
RF stands for radio frequency. An RF gate transmits a signal in the 8.2 MHz band; an RF label or hard tag contains a small tuned circuit that resonates at that frequency and disturbs the field, which the receiver pedestal picks up as an alarm. In practice this means:
- Thin, flat labels: RF soft labels are paper-thin adhesive stickers, easy to apply to boxes, blister packs, books and stationery, and cheap to buy in bulk.
- Simple deactivation: a flat deactivator pad at the till switches the label off when the cashier passes the item over it.
- Reusable hard tags: RF hard tags clip onto garments and release with a magnetic detacher, the same workflow as AM.
- Sensitivity to metal and foil: RF signals are blocked or detuned by metal shelving, foil packaging and metallised bags, so a label on a foil pouch or a tag wrapped in foil may not be detected.
How an EAS AM system works
AM stands for acousto-magnetic. An AM gate pulses a signal at 58 kHz; inside an AM label are magnetostrictive strips that start to vibrate at that frequency and keep ringing for a fraction of a second after each pulse. The receiver listens for that ring in the gap between pulses. The practical consequences:
- Better performance around metal: AM labels are far less affected by foil, metal shelving and shopping trolleys, which is why supermarkets and pharmacies lean towards AM.
- Wider gate spacing: AM pedestals can typically be set further apart for the same detection reliability, useful for broad entrances.
- Thicker labels: an AM soft label is a small plastic-cased strip rather than a flat sticker, so it sits better on rigid packaging and non-woven clothing labels than on very thin or curved items.
- Label cost: AM consumables are usually priced higher than RF labels, which matters when you tag thousands of low-value lines.
Which stores suit RF?
An EAS RF system is usually the sensible choice for:
- Bookshops, stationers and libraries, where flat labels go inside covers and packaging without being noticed.
- Clothing and footwear stores that mostly use reusable hard tags and want lower running costs.
- Small and medium stores with a standard single or double doorway and little metal near the exit.
- Retailers tagging a very high volume of low-margin items where label price is a deciding factor.
Which stores suit AM?
An EAS AM system earns its higher consumable cost when:
- You sell products in foil, tins, cans or metallised packaging, as in supermarkets, pharmacies, cosmetics and liquor outlets.
- Shoppers pass the gates with metal trolleys and baskets.
- The entrance is wide and you want fewer pedestals or a cleaner look.
- Metal racks, doors or fixtures sit close to the exit and would interfere with an RF field.
Questions to answer before you decide
- What are you protecting? List your highest-shrink categories and note their packaging. Mostly foil or metal points to AM; mostly paper, card and fabric points to RF.
- How will you tag? If most stock will carry reusable hard tags, the label cost gap matters less and either technology works.
- What does the exit look like? Measure the clear width and note any metal within a metre or two of where the pedestals will stand.
- Do suppliers source-tag for you? If your vendors already apply labels at the factory, match their frequency rather than re-tagging everything in store.
- Do you plan to expand? Standardising on one technology across branches keeps consumables, training and spare parts simple.
