EAS Hard Tags vs Soft Labels: Which Should You Tag With?

Once you have decided to protect your stock electronically, the next question is rarely about the gate — it is about what goes on the product. EAS hard tags and soft labels do the same basic job, but they suit very different kinds of merchandise, and choosing wrongly costs you either in damaged stock or in repeat theft.

Here is a straightforward comparison to help you decide.

What EAS hard tags do well

A hard tag is a reusable plastic tag pinned or clamped onto the item and removed at the till with a magnetic detacher or a hook key. Because it is reusable, the cost sits in the initial purchase rather than in every single sale.

  • Reusable. The same tag cycles through hundreds of garments over its life.
  • Visible deterrent. A bulky tag is a signal in itself — a great deal of shoplifting is opportunistic, and an obvious tag redirects it.
  • Hard to defeat quietly. Removing one without the right detacher usually means damaging the item, which removes most of the incentive.
  • Best for apparel and higher-value goods — clothing, footwear, bags, accessories.

The trade-offs are real too: hard tags need staff time to attach and remove, they leave a pin hole in fabric, and they are unsuitable for delicate materials, knitwear or anything sealed in packaging.

What soft labels do well

A soft label is a thin adhesive label applied to the product or its packaging and deactivated at the counter. It is not reused — it leaves the store with the customer.

  • Fast to apply. Labels can be applied at goods-in in bulk, or even at source by your supplier.
  • No damage. Nothing is pierced or clamped, so packaged goods and delicate items stay saleable.
  • Discreet. Useful where a bulky tag would spoil a display or a premium presentation.
  • Best for packaged goods — supermarket lines, cosmetics, stationery, books, boxed electronics.

Against that, labels are a per-item consumable cost, they can be peeled off by a determined thief, and they do not stick reliably to every surface — porous, curved or textured packaging can be a problem.

Matching the tag to the system

One point that trips up first-time buyers: your tags and labels must match the technology of your gates. RF and AM are different systems, and they are not interchangeable. An AM label will not be read by an RF gate, and vice versa. If you already have gates installed, confirm which system they use before ordering consumables. If you are buying both together, decide the system first and let that drive the tag choice.

Most stores use both

In practice the hard-tag-or-soft-label question is usually answered with “both, in different places”. A typical split looks like this:

  • Hard tags on garments, outerwear and anything high-value and easy to conceal
  • Soft labels on packaged, boxed or shrink-wrapped lines
  • Specialist tags where the standard options do not fit — bottle tags for wines and spirits, lock hooks for hanging display items, safer boxes for small high-value goods
  • Non-woven clothing labels where a pin would damage the fabric but a garment still needs protection

Whatever the mix, the operational detail matters as much as the hardware. Every till needs a working detacher within easy reach, staff need to know the removal routine well enough to do it without slowing the queue, and someone needs to own the job of checking that deactivation is actually working — a label that is not deactivated turns your gate into a source of false alarms, and false alarms are how staff learn to ignore the alarm entirely.
